Virginia Cooperative Extension to host agritourism conference April 5-6

Over 50 speakers will deliver dynamic, relevant, and interactive presentations on opportunities and challenges for agritourism entrepreneurs April 5 and 6.

Over 50 speakers will deliver dynamic, relevant, and interactive presentations on opportunities and challenges for agritourism entrepreneurs April 5 and 6.

Economic development staff and government leaders will gather to explore innovative strategies for promoting tourism activities in the agricultural sector on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 5-6, at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in Halifax, Virginia. The event is co-sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Participants can register online for the conference before Friday, March 25, for a one day cost of $95 or both days for $135.

Over 50 speakers will deliver dynamic, relevant, and interactive presentations on opportunities and challenges for agritourism entrepreneurs. Participants will explore agritourism topics including weddings, concerts, social media promotion, marketing, hospitality, regional networks, zoning and conservation, financing and legal structures, wineries and farm craft breweries, bed and breakfast, food and farm safety, farm workforce, and businesses planning.

National Health Outreach Conference held in Roanoke, Virginia on April 6-8

ROANOKE, Va., Feb. 25, 2016 – Virginia Cooperative Extension will host the 2016 National Health Outreach Conference in Roanoke, Virginia, from April 6-8.

The theme for this year’s conference is “All Aboard: Building Partnerships for a Healthy America.”

Health professionals, health educators, health policy makers, and anyone interested in learning more about physical and mental wellness should attend the conference.

The goal of the conference is to offer a participatory and collaborative conference joining organizations and agencies working across systems to address current and future health issues. The conference begins on April 6 at 12:30 p.m. with participants having the choice of either several tours or the pre-conference.

The conference will be kicked off with a banquet at 6 p.m. Plenary sessions and concurrent sessions will be held April 7-8 with the conference concluding at noon on April 8

Virginia Tech to co-host Governor’s Conference on Agricultural Trade on March 7-8

BLACKSBURG, Va., Feb. 11, 2016 – The Virginia Tech Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics will co-host the 8th annual Governor’s Conference on Agricultural Tradeon March 7-8 at the Hilton Richmond Downtown Hotel.

The two-day conference, entitled “The New Virginia Economy: Expanding Agricultural Opportunities Worldwide,” is also hosted by Gov. Terry McAuliffe, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, and the Virginia Port Authority.

The event will bring together producers, agribusinesses, entrepreneurs, exporters, foreign ambassadors, embassy ministers, land-grant university leadership, state and federal government officials, and others to discuss challenges and opportunities for global exports. Moderated panel discussions and private meetings regarding the international trade of agricultural goods will be held as well.

“This year’s conference will focus on our ongoing efforts helping existing businesses expand, attracting new businesses to the commonwealth, and assisting businesses as they promote and sell more of their outstanding products in the global marketplace.” McAuliffe said

Virginia Tech to host beef cattle health conference in Blacksburg Jan. 30

Last year’s Beef Cattle Health Conference attracted more than 300 cattle producers and set a new attendance record.

BLACKSBURG, Va., Jan. 20, 2016 – The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension are hosting the Virginia Tech Beef Cattle Health Conference on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Designed to give beef cattle producers an opportunity to learn strategies to improve the health of their herds, the conference will take place in the auditorium at Virginia Tech’s Litton-Reaves Hall, located at 175 West Campus Drive.

The conference will feature special guest Tom Noffsinger of Benkelman, Nebraska, a consulting feedlot veterinarian best known for his passion and enthusiasm for working with feed yards and ranches on low-stress cattle handing. An increasing number of feed yards and ranches are incorporating the low-stress handing philosophy and production practice into their daily operations to their and their cattle’s benefit.

Virginia Cooperative Extension hosts 2016 Winter Forage conferences, features experts on tall fescue

Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Forage and Grassland Council are hosting several winter conferences on tall fescue in January to demonstrate novel approaches to managing fescue production and also disease management of the grass.

The theme of the conference series this year is “Tall Fescue in the 21st Century,” and will highlight current knowledge and practices that producers can apply to management of their tall fescue-based grazing systems.

The conferences will occur throughout the state from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m in the following locations:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 26: Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Blackstone;
  • Wednesday, Jan. 27: Wytheville Meeting Center, Wytheville;
  • Thursday, Jan. 28: Weyers Cave Community Center, Weyers Cave.
