4-H tractor operators win state competition, advance to National 4-H Engineering Challenge

4-H members Cody Johnson, at left, and Garrett Hopkins recently won the 4-H Tractor Operators Contest. The two will represent Virginia at the National 4-H Engineering Challenge in September.

Central Virginia showed well at the recent 2016 Virginia 4-H Tractor Operators Contest. Garrett Hopkins of the Orange County 4-H Club placed first, and Cody Johnson of the Three Rivers 4-H Livestock Club placed second in the event.

The Virginia Beef Expo hosted the competition April 15 at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The Tractor Operators Contest provides 4-H members an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of tractor maintenance, safety, and skill in operation. The contest includes the following events: operating a tractor with two-wheel implement attached, operating a tractor with four-wheel implement attached, and written and parts identification examination.

Virginia 4-H’ers excel at national livestock skillathon competition

BLACKSBURG, Va., Jan. 23, 2015 – Virginia’s 4-H Livestock Skillathon Team placed first at the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Contest, held Nov. 17, 2014, during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Virginia team was competitive in all categories, placing first in evaluation and quality assurance and second in identification, and all of the team members placed in the top four overall. This is was the third time in three years that a team from Virginia has won the contest.
